loretta-sanchez-and-gretzky2***NOTE: Read Caciques Part II where I argue that Congresswoman Sanchez’ scandal is not only about adultery but also about corruption***

I had really hoped that the Loretta Sanchez Scandal was going to be a baseless rumor that Congresswoman Sanchez would put to rest.  I was wrong.  I tried to contact Congresswoman Sanchez’ press person three times but to no avail.  I made it clear that I was an independent blogger in Chicago that was worried about the  damage that this rumor had begun to have on her reputation as a Latina leader.  I even said that our Chicago readers were eager to hear her side of the story.  But my calls have been unanswered.  Her office did not even offer a “no comment at this time.”  As Gustavo Arellano has already made clear, they just aren’t speaking to anyone.

Given the numerous adultery scandals that have cost many men key positions (e.g. Sanford’s national chairmanship, Eliot Spitzer’s governorship, John Edwards’ candidacy), Sanchez would be one of the first (if not the first) women to be taken down by an adultery scandal; thus, how she responds to these accusations could be precedent-setting.  For a while now, pundits have been talking about the fact that women seem never to be involved in these scandals.  Bill Maher believes that’s because men are more unfaithful/promiscuous by nature.  Others, such as Naomi Klein, think that most people just don’t think to look at women’s infidelity because there just aren’t that many women in office.  In any case, Sanchez’ choice to be silent on this issue is creating enough potential energy that should it evolve as the Edwards story did ( I don’t meant to imply that there is a sex tape out there. just that his scandal started as a blog rumor too), not only will her career be destroyed but a new door for female public officials will be opened, one that invites the kind of public scrutiny of their private sex lives that until now only men have enjoyed.

Three times and not even a courtesy “no comment” or returned call? I’m beginning to think that Sanchez’s office has a problem with bloggers. She isn’t very new media savvy and of course, by evading us (bloggers), it makes it look like she has something to hide.

Very true that the Edwards scandal really was all over the blogs before the traditional media even touched it.

Yes, Loretta is blazing a trail that reaches new lows, even for a congressperson. But you and Adriana have found her trail and it leads back to the truth. I’m sure that worries her, especially since she faces a tough reelection campaign next year. Her refusal to answer the mounting questions, demonstrates that she believes she has something to hide. If the allegations about her adultery with Einwechter were false, you can be sure she would have denied it by now. Instead, it is obvious that she has given strict instructions to her staff to stonewall all inquiries. Her conduct in using her official travel to pursue a relationship with a married officer is just as reprehensible as Sanford’s, yet the “mainstream” media refuses to investigate and report on it. This can only be explained by their desire to protect a cherished political ally, because apparently the public’s appetite for these political sex scandal stories is insatiable. Just look at the obsession with the Sanford case.

About this blog

While some people look at cockroaches as disgusting pests, I view them as resilient organisms that predate humans and will likely outlive us as well. People of color, the poor, the downtrodden, and the oppressed, much like cockroaches, are often despised, feared and in some cases have been the objects of extermination.

I started this blog as an attempt to understand the complicated world we live in. Things have changed since the old days of conquest, colonization, and slavery. Anonymous living, consumerism, and mass media have made it difficult to identify the forces that make modern-day oppression possible. Thus, posts here tend to focus on corruption, media, bureaucracy, ethics, economics, law, human rights, etc...in short, I try to take a second-order inquiry into assumptions and systems that some of us take for granted. I also take time to challenge stereotypes that function to place us in a box. Occasionally, I just rant.
